Leslie William Smith

Call 1997
Practice Crime

Les was called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1997 having spent nine years as principal Lecturer in Criminal Law at multiple Universities and Colleges

Les has over fourteen years’ experience of appearing for the Defence in serious criminal matters including: murder, torture, wounding, GBH and kidnap, Large scale conspiracy to import and supply Class A Controlled drugs, Conspiracy to defraud, and serious sexual assaults including rape.

Les came to Chamber’s in 2001, from 2 Paper Buildings, London. Initially he came as a Civil Practitioner, representing the motor trade in a variety of Commercial, contractual and employment disputes. Instructed by both Renault U.K. and large car dealerships, he was one of only two Counsel instructed to advice Mercedes Benz car dealerships in their challenge to changes in their franchise agreements. This built upon his specialist papers in European Competition Law and Employment Law whilst at Bar school.

Having joined Chambers however, he quickly developed a reputation in Criminal trial advocacy and was widely instructed. In 2012 he was asked to become retained Counsel and In-house advocate for Renshaw Derrick Solicitors, who said of him “Messrs Renshaw Derrick are pleased to be able to recommend Mr. Smith to their Clients with confident that his excellent Jury skills, Client care and thorough preparation will ensure that our Client’s receive the best possible representation.“

Following the retirement of Mr Robert Renshaw and Mr Doug Derrick, Les returns to Chambers to assist the Criminal Law Team and to bring his considerable advocacy skills to the Family and Civil Law teams.

Outside of practice, Les was one of the youngest persons to stand for Parliament (aged 21), trained as a Local Preacher in the Methodist Church and has an active interest in the psychology of persuasion. “There aren’t many areas of intellectual study, which include the work and rhetoric of Aristotle, Adolf Hitler and Paul McKenna!” he said.

Les is licensed by the Bar Council to undertake Instructions from Professional Bodies, individual solicitors and by Direct Access.
