Richard divides his practice between criminal defence and civil litigation. On the civil side Richard’s practice encompasses a broad range of civil work, acting for both claimants and defendants. This work includes:
• Personal Injury
• Commercial litigation
• Contract
• Professional negligence
In addition to appearing in the County Court Richard is regularly instructed to undertake drafting and advisory work on all matters.
In his criminal work Richard is often instructed in serious crown court cases. These include s.18, robbery, fraud, blackmail, serious drugs, serious public disorder and sexual offences (including historical). He has been in many multi-handed cases.
Richard has a reputation for hard work. His advocacy has been frequently well received, as has his written work.
Richard gets on well with lay clients and whilst he always gives full and proper advice he does his best to empathise with a defendants predicament and secure the best outcome for that defendant.
Richard was awarded major scholarships by the Middle Temple during both the BVC and pupillage.
Although Richard’s practice is predominantly based on the Western Circuit, he is willing to undertake cases nationwide.
In 2001 Richard took a year off from practice to complete an LLM in International Criminal Law and has published a number of articles and papers on the subject, both in the UK and internationally. Most notably, Richard’s paper International Law, the crime of’Aggression’ and the Ius Ad Bellum (International Criminal Law Review, November 2002 pp301-373, The Hague) received great praise when published.
When not working, Richard is a keen sailor and diver and can usually be found either on the waves or beneath them.
